Everything is Broken

This morning I had to take the train to work. This is a sad state of affairs. I have three bikes, and they’re all uniquely broken right now.

Road: Cannondale Synapse Carbon 105

Surprisingly this didn’t happen when I was run off my bike back in October. I left it D-locked to a pole outside REI in SOHO for a minute while I popped in to grab a super-light tent for a weekend of riding and cycling, when some kids fucking around knocked it over.

As I came outside, they picked it up to set it right but dropped it again. They gave me a half-arsed apology, shrugged, and mumbled: “You know how it is bra.” White dude. “Bra.” Not even bro. I should have murdered him.

The most painful bike problem of the three: a deep flesh wound in my carbon frame.

I rode it around for a few months hoping it wouldn’t fall apart on me, but that crash gave the top tube another smaller flesh wound. The fear is increasing. The back wheel is switched to indoor-trainer mode with a CycleOps training tire while I ask around about quotes to get it patched.

Quotes have ranged widely, with Chelsea Bikes saying $650 (/wo paint job or frame strip/reassembly), and Swamp Ghost suggesting closer to $200. Swamp Ghost seems legit enough, and can turn it around in a week or two, beating the six weeks Chelsea offered.

If anyone knows a better option near NYC then let me know in the comments!

MTB: Ghost SE 3000

Whilst swapping out some flats for a pair of Shimano PD-M530 I must have borked the thread.

I bought this one in the UK back in 2012, smashed it around Kielder Forest for a year, then flew it to the States. It’s been bashed and ridden to death. I considered replacing the crankset as it’s not in great nick, but instead I’ve picked up a pedal tap so I can simply rethread it.

Back wheel is… actually nobody knows. After my first cross race (or potentially the car rack to and from Connecticut) the hub was loose, but I got that fixed mid-ride out in the sticks for $40.

Still, the gears are slipping around like hell, and it’s not the derailleur. Taking it back to Strictly Bicycles to see if they know whats wrong, after Red Lantern Bicycles said the back wheel is “Not right”. Way out of my league that. Now I have to wobbly ride this through the city, over the George W bridge, just to get my bike fixed.

Site-Note: Probably an obvious one, but if you don’t have a car, make sure you buy a bike from somewhere you can walk or train that bike. I borrowed a friends car to get this thing, and that was clearly a mistake now that it needs to go back. This is the least convenient bike shop to get to in the NYC/NJ area.

Time for a Plan

Once I’ve got the CAADX back wheel sorted and the Synapse carbon patch complete, I’m going to take advantage of the insanely large new basement I’ll be moving into shortly, because workspace for these projects at the current apartment is a bit tight:

Time to create a workshop. Spending a few hundred on tools, and taking a bit of time to learn how to solve various tasks, should save me a whole pile of money in the long run.

I’ve got a few things: crank arm pullers, various pedal wrenches, various allen keys, etc., but I’m going to go all out ridiculous with the tools now. Something like this:

Update: I managed to get the MTB left crank arm thread fixed by taking right flat pedal and threading it through from the other side. This did essentially the same job as the pedal tap and saved me $60 from having to buy it! Phew.
